CHAPTER 19

ABBY

Some distant part of me becomes aware that the phone is ringing, though I don’t know for how long.

Slowly I drag my head up and blink, looking around as I try to figure out what time it is. My phone is lying upside down on the floor, buzzing against the rug beside my bed.

Without leaving the safety of the covers, I stick out a hand and scoop up the phone. The blazing brightness of the screen makes me squint as I look to see who’s calling me.

It’s Katherine. No doubt she wants to know what became of my stakeout, but I’m not sure I can talk about it right now.

I don’t think I can talk to anyone.

Even though I know she’ll be sympathetic, there will also be a sense of I told you so that I’m just not ready for yet.

I feel raw and utterly broken, and there’s no one in the world who could console me right now.

Knowing she’ll grow concerned if she doesn’t hear from me though, I pull myself together enough to fire off a short text.

Saw him with some girl.

Then I turn my phone off and collapse into the sheets once again.

It’s another thirty minutes or so before finally I feel like I’ve cried all I can cry, and I sit stiffly on the edge of the bed, the tips of my toes touching the carpet.

I’m numb. I could literally get shot, and I don’t think I’d feel a thing.

It’s late now, nearly midnight. Spencer still hasn’t come home.

That makes my stomach turn all over again.

What, does he really think I’ll believe he had to stay at the office that late? He must think I’m stupid.

Tomorrow morning I’ll confront him about everything, showing him the proof I have.

It won’t feel good, but I know it’s what I’ve got to do.

Tonight though, I just can’t handle it.

Lying in bed, I stare blankly at the wall and windows in front of me. I hardly even blink, the minutes and then hours passing in total silence. Still no sign of my husband.

I’m beyond tears at this point. There’s nothing left of me.

At some point during the wee hours of morning, the front door opens with a small squeak. Spencer has finally returned.

I remain on my side with my back to the bedroom door. I hear him padding around the kitchen for a few minutes before he enters the bedroom. The door opens, and a ray of light is cast across the bed.

I shut my eyes and try to keep my breathing as even as possible as I hear Spencer cross the room and enter the bathroom.

The hiss of the shower hits my ears. Washing off whatever sins he’s committed, no doubt.

My thoughts race as I lie there, wondering if I should say something right now, but I quickly think better of it.

I’m in too fragile of an emotional state and just feel too raw to deal with it.

When Spencer finishes up in the bathroom, I hear the door open and then he softly creeps over to his side of the bed and climbs in with me.
